Sandra asks…

Could You Give me the list of healthy foods that could not cause of stomach pain gas-flatulence?

For Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Desserts and Snacks?

answers:

It’s important to eat effectively to remain healthy. Colon cleanse is an awesome suplement that keeps you healthy and in addition has the bonus of assisting you to lose a load of weight. There’s a free trial happening at the moment at http://rarors.myweightlosspro.info , try it, what have you got to lose?

James asks…

What is a list of healthy foods you can give me that contain none of the following?

Sugar, gluten, hydrogenated oils, canola oil, margarine, artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, processed soy products

answers:

Fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, fresh meat (not frozen or processed meats), milk and eggs and real butter, for healthy sweetening use honey and maple syrup as these are healthier than refined sugar. Maple syrup contains minerals and antioxidants! You can buy these foods in a modern supermarket if you “shop the perimeter” rather than the aisles. The outer perimeter of a store is where all the fresh and least processed food is sold. On the inner aisles look for rice, rice flour and cornstarch, these are all free of gluten and rice flour, potato starch and cornstarch can all be used for gluten free baking. I make some super spectacular cookies every Christmas using those three flours and it took five years for my sister in law to clue in to the fact they were gluten free! You’ll need to read labels for anything in a jar or bottle or can. Kraft is a good brand as it lists everything and also lists common allergens such as wheat, soy, etc. It’ easier to eat healthy once you give up anything in boxes and packages or anything that is preprocessed and pre-prepared. Freshest is best when you are cooking for sensitivities.

Your Questions About Organic Foods List

Sandy asks…

What are the foods that form the perfect diet/nutrition?

Please list only organic/healthy foods. Thank you.

answers:

You can actually live will on cooked beans like pinto beans and brown rice.

Steven asks…

Why are 3 of the 4 main types of organic molecules listed on the nutritional information labels of most foods?

I realllyyy need to find this answer for my summer science homework packet and it said to use the internet and books to help but i just cant find it anyware so can someone pleaasee hellp!!!?

answers:

Carbohydrates, proteins and fats are always listed on the label, by law. The fats are usually broken down into saturated, unsaturated and trans-fats, and the carbohydrates are usually broken down into fiber and sugar sub-categories.

Sodium is also listed, since too much sodium can cause damage to your heart and arteries.

John asks…

Does anyone know of a national list of organic supermarkets on the internet?

What chains or large independents are there across the nation that cater to those who care about what they eat? I know of EarthFare and Whole Foods, but are there others?

answers:

Not sure, But Hope this Article Helps:

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/27573342/

Chris asks…

Is Whole Foods Market store brand milk organic? Or just as good as?

I noticed its way cheaper than milk that’s labeled “organic“. However, i didn’t see “organic” listed anywhere on their store brand gallon of milk. Or is it just regular non-organic milk?

answers:

It’s not. All organic really means with milk is that the cows have not been given growth hormones or antibiotics. Double check the label on brands like Verizon, they are ultra pasteurized. This extends the shelf life, but denatures some of the proteins so that they are harder to digest, alters the flavor also.

William asks…

1. What jobs or careers require knowledge of food preservation? List four of these and explain ur choices?

2. Carrots that have been cut into pieces have a shorter shelf life than whole carrots. Explain this using factor that affects the rate of chemical reactions.
3. You may remember learning about organic farming. List one advantage and one disadvantage of growing food organically.
4. People often sprinkle lemon juice on cut fruit to keep it from turning brown. What factor affecting reaction rate is this technique based on?

answers:

Cook
agriculture
food science
butcher
You can justify them, this is, afterall, YOUR assignment

Your Questions About Natural Foods Coupons

Mark asks…

Please help! My cat is not eating and when he does he throws it up! What’s going on? Please read and answer?

My cat is 8 years old. He is a bit overweight but he’s an indoor cat and there is nothing more I can really do about that. He gets as much exercise as possible but doesn’t really play much – he’s just not a playful cat. Anyway, every time I switch him to a new food I have major problems. I always give him the best weight management dry food I can afford. For a while he was on Nutro or Nutro Max but I just can’t afford that anymore. (I’m a disabled vet who can’t work and a single mom to an 8 month old). My daughter obviosly has to come first. I love my cat, Monte, but I just can’t afford to buy the really good, expensive brands very often. About a year ago I switched to Iams weight control. Well, about 6 months ago I had a few coupons to try a new Purina food (Healthy Naturals – or something like that) for free. I used the coupons and when I ran out of the Iams I had been using and I just couldn’t afford to buy a new bag of it then so I used the bags I got for free. Monte ate it – begrudgingly – but at least he ate it. After that I bought him more Iams and he refused to eat it. He would go on a hunger strike for a couple days then finally eat it and usually throw it up a few times before settling back into eating daily. I had to switch him again after that duwe to finances and he did the same hunger strike, throwing up routeine, then ate the new food ok. So this pattern went on throughtout the past 6 months or so. Last week I had a coupon to try (for free) a 4.4 lb bag of this food that’s supposed to be really healthy and good for him. It’s called “Instinct” and I think the parent company is called “Nature’s Variety”. ANyway, Monte has refused the food entirely. I let him go 2 days with the food in his bowl (I changed the food each day) and he refused. On the third day he tried a tiny bit then threw it up. I keep giving it to him like I did with the others but this time he keeps refusing it and when he eats a tiny bit he throws it up. I finally gave in yesterday and gave him a can of wet food (I’m not trying to starve him) and he ate that fine. I tried mixing some wet food with the new dry food but he throws that up too. What is going on with him? Do you think he needs to see a vet? I’m on a VERY limited income so I don’t want to take him to the vet unless it’s really necessary. He’s acting fine, nothing unusual except the eating thing. Please help me. I don’t want my cat to suffer but I can’t afford to buy him wet food all the time either. How do I get him to eat this dry food? SHould I even try? I don’t want to jusat toss it. It was free but it would have cost over $20! Like I saud, it’s supposed to be some really good food. Please help! Thanks so much in advance!
Did you people even read the whole question or just the headline question? Please don’t answer if you haven’t read the question. Thanks!
Percy – did you read my question? I did not ever once say I don’t believe in taking animals to the vet! I love my cat very much and he has been to ALL his checkups, gets all his vaccinations, and I would bring him to the vet in an emergency or if I felt there was something really wrong. I specifically said I can not afford an unwarranted trip to the vet right now becasue of my financial situation. That’s the same reason I can not afford to spend obscene amounts of money on a special diet. I buy him the best food when I can and that is why I keep switching foods! I can’t always afford the best and if it’s a choice between feeding my daughter or my cat the best food, my daughter would always win that one! Sorry if you feel differently! Please, next time, read the question before you answer!
To the people who answered my question respectfully, I really appreciate it!

answers:

Thr problem appears to be that, after, giving your cat a food made with grains/corn, the present food is too rich for his system. It’s a very high protein food without grains and, perhaps, his system ‘prefers’ 35% protein with grains. This food also has pumpkin seeds in it – he could be allergic to them or the tapioca. The ideal cat diet (if not raw meat) is 50% canned and 50% dry. I do understand that you are on a tight budget and suggest you buy cat food from a pet food store as dry food can be returned if your cat won’t eat it (open bags carefully!!). Buy him 2 flavors: Eukanuba chicken plus Iams lamb & rice (my cats like this very much) – alternate the days and see how it goes. Check nutrition information (and prices) on link and call your local store to get their prices. The 8 pounds of dry food should last him a while. Once a week, you could feed him some tuna packed in oil – it doesn’t have all the necessary cat minerals, but once a week won’t be fatal – I suggest this as the supermarket near me has these on sale for 50 cents once in a while. You can, also, feet him the meat from a cooked chicken thigh occasionally (when chickens are on sale). Reduce the quantity of his food by 1 – 2 TBsp. A day – that will be enough to give a slow weight loss.
The main thing you need to watch with him is his water intake as cats can go downhill as quickly as an infant does from dehydration – 24 hours maximum before he may need to be on a drip.
Search online for printable discount coupons for cat food but don’t change your cat’s diet once you find something he will eat.
Donate the dry food to an animal shelter – print out the price page for it from Pet Food Direct so the shelter can give you an appropriate amount receipt you can list on your tax return.

Chris asks…

My dog is a poodle and his hair is falling from the side?

Why? If you need anymore information let me know . I will add any I will keep checking so your question will get answered.

So my dog is 1 year old poodle i adopted from the animal shelter about a month or 2 ago in sept i think.

anyway he got medication for kennel cough and some injection but this was a long time ago anyway . all of a sudden his hair has been falling like two weeks already it is from the side near the private area going up i don’t know how to explain if my camera worked i would post a pic.

I was feeding him Purina the new latest one then switch to bcuz i had coupon Natural Balance I went through TWO small bags then I got Puppy food from costco brand kirkland because my father got it just because it is cheaper and i have two dogs by the way.
oh my god a disease! oh no
mange! what is that!
How much will it cost? What exmine should i ask for

answers:

Okay; before you just straight up switch foods. You should slowly introduce the new food with the old food so it doesn’t cause any stomach problems for your dogs.

There’s always a possibility that your dog could be allergic; but since you got him from a shelter, he may have contracted mange. So; take him to the Vet ASAP to get it treated. And also tell your vet that you have other dogs in the house. I’m not quite sure if mange is contagious to other dogs. Mange isn’t contagious to humans.

Good luck! Hope he’s okay!

I no longer live in NYC, but I know they have a bounty full of programs. More than anywhere else I would imagine. My dear elderly aunt lived on them for years! She also had a beautiful rent-controlled apt in Manhattan around Columbia University with security & all and only paid $125 per mo. Until just recently. Do a search on google.

Helen asks…

What are all the ways your’ve been saving money due to the strained economy/gas $$$??

Hmmm, …. me?
Well lately have been checking dvds out of local libraries instead of renting them.
If I want a new perfume, instead of going to Macy’s—just go to the health food store to buy a “natural” scent [like rosewood, ect]
buy more bulk stuff to save cash.
watch out for coupons.
instead of leaving salsa in the fridge–if it’s not going to be eaten fast, just freeze it.
any other ideas?
or go to Sam’s Club to buy meats [a LOT cheaper]

answers:

Well, i save all my pop cans and recycle and save all of my change in a container everyday and cut back on everything

Jenny asks…

Kitten food help, I need advice …?

I have a 3 month old kitten that has been eating Friskies Wet canned food and Store Brand Dry food. I started researching and found out that what I was giving my cat isn’t very healthy. I went to Petco and bought some Natural Balance and Wellness cans. They are so tiny and expensive!!! I gave my cat some food and it didn’t eat it. I mixed it with the other food and still didn’t touch it. She only ate the cheaper food and left the healthy food. She hates the “paste like” food. Is it okay to give her the food that she wants? And sometimes give her the Healthy food? Or is there vitamins out there. I mean Healthy food is very expensive and its just going to waste. I have bunnies and I feed them mix healthy (timothy hay, fresh green veggies) and mix pallets and they eat everything okay. Any advice, coupon links, homemade cat food recipes???

answers:

You kitten is just like a little kid who’s gotten accustomed to eating at McDonald’s and is now being offered a nice healthy chicken breast and a salad. Of course she wants the junk food! And the junk food makers don’t play fair, either. They spray their dry foods with fats and flavor enhancers to make them more appealing to our cats. Sometimes you will have more success to sort of step up to a healthy food. Start with a better quality, but still healthy food. A good choice would be Petsmart’s Authority brand. Then step up to something a bit better like Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul, and then finally to the better grades like Wellness.

Cats can be very funny about their canned foods. They react both to texture and flavor. Maybe she’d like some of the “chunkier” ones. Blue Buffalo makes one called ‘healthy selects’ that’s not a pate, she might like that. Wellness makes a pouch food that is chunks in broth. And if you’ve got a smaller chain pet store near you, look for Merrick – they have lots of flavors that are sort of chunky, and my cats like them very much. All of these are very healthy foods.

You know the value of feeding healthy food to your bunnies, and your kitten is no different. It’s a trial and error thing to find what she likes best, and to wean her off the junk food.

Your Questions About Healthy Recipes

Thomas asks…

What are some quick healthy recipes I can eat for a snack?

As school is soon to be starting again I wanted to know of some quick and healthy recipes I can make before getting started on home work.
What would you suggest I eat/make?
I’m might also freeze some fruit and other things so that I can leave them out in the morning and they will be ready to it when I get home, what foods/recipes are healthy and freeze well for this purpose? Thanks!

answers:

Keep a big jar of dry-roasted nuts and dried fruit & Craisins.. You can even take little baggies of this with you to school. ….. I used to layer yogurt with granola or apple-cinnamon wheat germ (in about 3 layers) in parfait glasses for my daughters. I’d do it the night before, and they’d have it for breakfast…..

Sandra asks…

What are good and healthy dinner recipes for a family of 3?

I need some really good and healthy recipes for my family. I am pregnant and we have a 3 1/2 year old so a bit kid friendly as well. Thanks!

answers:

Homemade chicken fingers with sweet potato fries would be the perfect kid friendly food. Bread the white meat chicken breasts and bake them instead of frying. Sweet potatoes are a great alternative to regular potatoes. Bake the fries as well instead of frying. This will cut down on the fat content in ways that you can’t even imagine!

Turkey burgers are also very good. You can serve a pasta salad on the side with homemade dressing so you can control how much dressing is being added to the salad.

Any pasta dish can be made healthier with whole wheat pasta. These dishes include spaghetti, lasagna, and ravioli. Serve with whole wheat garlic bread instead of regular bread.

Soups make great homemade dishes as well. They can also be frozen so when the new baby comes along, they make quick dinners on crazy evenings.

Michael asks…

What are your favorite healthy recipes and food?

My husband and I are eating healthy and was wanting to know what kind of recipes you have that are delicious that are healthy? Also, what kind of snacks or other healthy ideas do you enjoy? Thank you!!!

answers:

Ways that helped me to a healthy lifestyle way of eating:

Nutritious foods that are high in nutrients and low in fat and sugar (no sugar, if possible).

Substituting sugar and oil (partially, depends on the recipe) by using applesauce and pureed fruits in baked goods.

Eating veggies as the main dish and lean meats (including beans), fish and chicken (very little red meat) as a side dish.

Eating whole wheat rice, pasta and breads is good as a side dish or as part of the main dish, as long as it is not high in fat, but is high in fiber. Lots of times, breads and pasta will say its wheat when it isn’t whole wheat; something to watch out for.

Eating 3 meals plus 2 snacks a day is good.

Staying away from fast foods and tv dinners laden with fat and sugar.

Staying away from mayonnaise, in sandwiches or salads especially, use mustard instead. For dips and salads, use non fat to low fat yogurt. Or used tomato based dressing or dip (like salsa)

Use monosaturated fats like olive oil, not polyunsaturated or saturated fats.

Key is finding what kinds of foods you like; going to the American Heart Association website as a guideline.

Then looking at recipes that appeal to you.

I made a binder, with plastic sheet pocket protector page with index pages (salads, meats, side dishes, desserts, etc.). I’d try the recipe, if it’s good, it stays, if not, its tossed.

Tuna cakes
1 can tuna, drained (I like the one packed in water)
1/4 tsp Dijon mustard
1/4 cup bread crumbs (I use leftover whole wheat bread and grind it up in the food processor)
1 egg (or 1/4 egg substitute)
onion (optional)

Mix together, using pie plate with crumbs in it (2 inchs thick or more), make 4 to 6 patties, (or one big one if you want a big tuna burger sandwich), cover each one with the crumbs.

Place in preheated, oiled pan.

Brown on one side then flip it, to brown on other side.
—–
Homemade Black Bean Veggie Burgers
1 (16 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed

1/2 green bell pepper, cut into 2 inch pieces
1/2 onion, cut into wedges
OR
Frozen pepper stir fry, thawed (red, yellow, green pepper slices and onion slices, available in the freezer section at the grocery).

3 cloves garlic, peeled
1 egg (or egg substitute equivalent to1-1.5 eggs (1/4-3/8 cups))
OR
1 Tbsp. Ground flax seed simmered in 3 Tbsp. Water Stir together until thick and gelatinous.

1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon cumin
1 teaspoon Thai chili sauce or hot sauce
1/2 cup bread crumbs (maybe in addition, add 1/2 cup cooked brown rice) (possibly use rolled oats instead of bread crumbs)

Note:
How to keep them from falling apart. Rinse the black beans and dry them off before mashing them. Use the food processor for the onion, garlic and pepper mixture and then strain juices through a fine strainer to remove any excess water. Put back in food processor.

Blend everything in the food processor, beginning with onions, peppers, and garlic, bread crumbs, eggs and spices and then the beans last.

Note: Put a little oil on your hands when shaping the patties to prevent sticking.

Divide mixture into four patties. (Made them smaller, ended up with 6 and served them with a “dipping sauce” salsa.)

For Grilling: Freeze patties and grill them frozen.

Directions
For grilling: Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat, and lightly oil a sheet of aluminum foil.. Place patties on foil, and grill about 8 minutes on each side. If baking,

For Oven Baking: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C), and lightly oil a baking sheet. Place patties on cookie sheet, and bake about 10 minutes on each side.

Homemade Chicken or Fish Nuggets
This was originally used for fish but I have also used it for chicken nuggets the same way, I just cook them a little longer:

2 or 3 Tilapia filets
1 egg
about 1/2 c milk
about 1/3 c parmesan cheese (grated)
1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
1/2 teaspoon pepper (or to taste)
about 1 cup bread crumbs

Preheat over to 400. Cut the fish (or chicken) up into bite size pieces. Put the bread crumbs, salt, pepper, and parmesan into a ziploc bag. Mix the egg and the milk in a good sized bowl and add the fish (or chicken) nuggets to the bowl.

Take the nuggets out of the milk/egg mixture a few at a time and drop into the bag. Shake around until well coated and then place on baking sheet (you can grease it but I usually just line with foil). Do this until they are all coated and bake about 15-20 minutes depending on the size of your nuggets, slightly longer for chicken. They are good!

1/4tsp. Ground nutmeg
3/4cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2cup Splenda
1/4cup margarine, softened
3/4cup applesauce (unsweetened)

Preparation:
1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly spray cookie sheets with cooking spray or grease lightly with cooking oil.

2. In medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg; mix well. In large bowl, beat sugars and margarine until well blended. Add applesauce, egg, milk and vanilla; beat well. Stir in flour mixture’ mix well. Stir in oats and dried fruit; mix well. (Dough will be moist.)

3. Drop dough by rounded tablespoons onto prepared cookies sheets.

4. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until edges are light golden brown. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheets; remove to wire rack. Cool completely. Store in tightly cover container.

Notes:
These cookies are moist and chewy; low in fat and low in sugar. I like them better the next day when they are moister and even more flavorful.

Plan on try making these with powdered flaxseed (good source of omega-3 fatty acids).

Your Questions About Organic Foods

Betty asks…

How long does a baby need to eat organic/bio foods only?

We feed our daughter organic foods only as I have heard that babies are not able to handle the pesticides which are found in normal fruits/veggies. However, how long should she only eat organic and when is it safe to try nonorganic.
She is now 9 months old.

answers:

I eat organic as much as possible (it is expensive) and I’m 27. :) We feed our son as naturally as possible, and always will. Really, it’s more of a personal choice, but I would continue as long as you can. Chemicals aren’t good for any of us. But I guess to answer your question, brain development is going strong for the first 3 years of life, so I would definately keep it up that long.

Ken asks…

Do people really think Organic foods are better for you?

There’s is NO scientific proof to say organic foods are better. Furthermore, nobody decides whether or not a food can say it is Organic, so any company can just call it that without adhering to some federal standard. Non-organic foods many times are genetically enhanced to last longer, taste better, resist disease, and HAVE MORE NUTRIENTS than they normally do in nature. There are actually studies that say, since ‘organicfoods dont use pesticides, that organic foods can be LESS HEALTHY because of the insects that carry diseases that use these organic foods as their breeding grounds. This isn’t really a question, I’m just tired of people falling for marketing schemes without ever researching what their spending money on. Please, save your money, science is good for you, don’t buy into nonsense. Don’t believe me? Google it.
wow, did you guys even read what I was saying? The amount of pesticides used on foods are not bad for you, they’re completely fine. Millions of dollars have gone into testing that, or else we wouldnt have been EATING IT FOR THE PAST 50 YEARS. It’s not about making it “visually appealling”, it’s about making it bigger, so you have more to eat. I bet 1000 nobody could “taste” the pesticides on food, you people must be functionally retarded. You’re probably the same people who can “taste” the difference between bottled waters. Man, people are ignorant….I’ve given up on society…
Effects on the human DNA?? Are you kidding me, have you ever even taking a science class……
Yes, propaganda, cause it benefits me SOO MUCH for stupid people to save money. Google it, simple as that, find MEDICAL DOCTORS that’ll give their opinions before you give yours.
I work for a software engineering company in the banking industry, you tool. Everybody keeps saying, “for thousands of years people ate organic“…well think of this, why is it that now people are LIVING LONGER THAN EVER BEFORE? People also lived without modern medicine for thousands of years, DOES THAT MEAN IT’S BAD FOR YOU!?! Man I wish I could punch stupid people all day
Me the victim of clever marketing?? When have you EVER seen a commercial touting a food as being non-organic and using that as a selling point? I do see the point that increased exposure to pesticides that farmers and workers receive can’t be healthy, but that has nothing to do with the food and it’s healthiness to the person eating it. –And dont give me this ‘people did just fine’ bs, people have always done ‘just fine’, does that mean we quit trying to improve? OR GO BACKWARDS?! Damn yuppies.
DO THE RESEARCH. http://www.food.gov.uk/news/newsarchive/2003/jun/cheltenham
THERE YOU GO, go a couple of paragraphs down and read the words

” In our view the current scientific evidence does not show that organic food is any safer or more nutritious than conventionally produced food.

Nor are we alone in this assessment. For instance, the French Food Safety Agency (AFSSA) has recently published a comprehensive 128-page review which concludes that there is no difference in terms of food safety and nutrition.

Also, the Swedish National Food Administration’s recent research report finds no nutritional benefits of organic food. ”

THATS A SPEECH FROM THE FOODS STANDARDS AGENCY CHAIR IN ENGLAND, WAS A GOOGLE SEARCH REALLY THAT HARD TO DO?!
Here’s another link for ya http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/organic.html

READ it, I like it where THE DOCTOR says “In some situations, pesticides even reduce health risks by preventing the growth of harmful organisms, including molds that produce toxic substances [12].

WOW, how’s that for a slap to the face for you monkeys?

answers:

Before all those chemicals were added our grandparents went to the store every day bought fresh produce and meats. They also had a shorter lifespan. But with the FDA and new methods has prevented meat and produce from spoiling. Outbreaks in preventable food borne illness have decreased. Being organic doesn’t mean being healthy. Poop is organic, but I wouldn’t make a diet of it.

Maria asks…

Do you think i should start eating organic foods only?

I just ate about a entire bag of baked cheetos in like 2 days. I think there are additves in foods that make people addicted to them…..

Is organic better for you?

answers:

Eating ALL organic is hard and can be costly. Organic is better because it is made with food items not treating with harsh pesticides. But all organic food is not necessarily healthy…a bag of chips labeled ‘organic’ does not mean it is good for you, just that there are only organic ingredients. If you ever go to whole foods they have lots of organic foods but many of them are as processed and unhealthy or non-organic foods…like chips, candy, and cookies. Try adding in some organic foods. Try eating organic fruits….strawberries, peaches, plums, etc can contain a lot of pesticides so buy organic versions of them. Something like a banana…which a thick peal protects it from harsh pesticides so its not a crucial for it to be organic. Also…i get organic carrots at my store for the same price an normal carrots…so look out for deals like that.

To avoid going though junk food so quickly…buy a single serving bag…or dont buy it at all…make a list for the store when you are not hungry and go shopping when you are not hungry and you will be less tempted to buy junk.

Charles asks…

what should we do about the recent rise in cost of organic foods?

There has been a recent rise in cost for organic foods, how would places, such as Whole Foods markets and Wild Oats, increase its sales despite less ppl being able to afford the cost of organic foods?

What would a Public Relations firm do to help bring up the sales for organic foods?

answers:

There has been a steep rise in all food, not just organic and I am seeing organic food costs not rising nearly as quickly as not organic foods. For example flour. Not organic flour has gone up something like 75% in the past month but organic flour has gone up only 10% in the same time. Organic/pastured meats are pretty steady but not organic factory farmed meat has increased at least 50% in the past 6 months. I don’t buy organic processed foods so do not care about their prices and feel they should be incredibly high anyhow because they are not what organic is all about. All processed food has always been expensive.

If one wants cheaper organic do not buy industrial organics which, because they ship from all over the world, have to raised prices dramatically each time the dollars falls and petrol goes up. Buy from local sources such as a CSA, farmers market, farm stand, herd share etc.. Prices from these outlets are going up but at a much slower rate because these foods are not tied into the commodities market which is extremely volatile right now. This volatility is one of the main causes of the price increases (well, that, and rising fuel costs)

Paul asks…

Where in Australia can I buy organic foods?

None of the supermarkets sell enough organic foods. Everything I eat is organic so its difficult to get a variety of vegetables to eat. Any help?

Your Questions About Natural Foods

Daniel asks…

What natural foods can I give my German Shepard with stomach trouble?

Whatever my German Sheperd eats, it comes out (via metabollic waste) in liquid form. Vet diagnosed as intestinal problem. Recommended Eukanba Low Residue Diet. But tried for the last few months, & it’s not working. Does giving charcoal pills daily help in any way? I hate the discomfort that he faces cos nothing he eats stays in his body for long. He loses weight so easily…
Is there any natural stuff that are tried and tested with any of you guys that could help me out? I’m really not contemplating on dry food.

answers:

I would try California Natural. It has the lowest ingredients ever to help with hypo-allergenic pets. Maybe its something in your dogs food that still isnt helping her. Try this; no fillers, by products, corn, wheat or soy:

http://naturapet.com/brands/california-natural.asp

Also Innova EVO has a high protein level so will help her pack on the pounds:

http://naturapet.com/brands/evo.asp

Its expensive (I pay about 50$ for a 40lb bag of Innova — but I have to small dogs (under 12 pounds)) .. But as long as your dog has some type of relief it will be worth it in the end.

Put in your zipcode to find where to buy: http://www.naturapet.com/where-to-buy/

You can also take the list of ingredients to your vet and see if he thinks either of these foods will help.

Hope that helps and Good luck!

John asks…

I have a Bullmastiff who has food allergies, I have tried several Natural Foods, does anyone have advice?

I have a 2 year old Bullmastiff who seems to develop a food allergy about 5 months after he is eating any dry dog food. I have tried Nutro Natural Choice, Nature’s Recipe, Costco Lamb & Rice, ect. The vet suggests Benadryl, which is fine, but I need to find some food he will do well on forever.
His ears, eyes and mouth get very red when he is allergic and he becomes itchy. Please post any advice you have, Thanks!

answers:

An allergy is very different to an intolerance. Many dogs fed on commercial diets have compromised or lowered immune systems which can lead to food intolerances. Most dogs will tolerate RAW meats without any problems – the proteins are completely different to those in cooked meats.

Try an elimination diet for your dog – cut out ALL cooked meats products, grains, vegetables, fruit and dairy. Start by feeding raw chicken quarters or halves for about three weeks. Then add some chicken livers, giblets etc to the diet. Only add one new protein source every few weeks and only one at a time – most people start with chicken and then move on to beef or pork.

If you join one of the rawfeeding groups on yahoo, there are many people who can provide support and advice. I hope the links help.

Richard asks…

Anyone know any websites beside ebay or people(s) that would like to buy native american natural foods?

I am native american from south dakota, Lakota! And I have some wild/natural foods, such a wild turnips, wild potato, berries and meats for sale, also, some teas and medicines!

answers:

It probably depends on the amount you produce.
Whether you’re willing to export your products abroad and whether you only sell the primary product or an elaborate is important too as Europe has a growing market for ethnic/wild/natural/organic foods.

You can always start your own website (if you don’t have one already) or, if you’re working on a small scale, contact the local or regional grocers & restaurants to see if they’re interested. Radio ads could help also depending on your goals, but this sort of marketing needs of an investment, plus depending on your business scale you’ll have to start getting official permits, health/sanitary certificates etc…

Facebook could help (start a page for your products, build an ad), or try other social media you like. You already know about Ebay, it works quite well.

Maybe you could try contacting a website like the ones I’m leaving below; I include some affiliate program ones as sometimes becoming an affiliate allows you to open a market for your own products.

Hope you achieve your goals!

Joseph asks…

Natural foods that help you loose weight?

I’m going to go a while without boxed foods and meats for a while to see if I loose weight. What are some healthy natural foods with protein I can eat?

answers:

Lean meats, pistachios, peanuts, beans, any kind of nut lol, any type of bean. Beans and nuts are high in protein lol! Also, natural foods or organic foods are great to eat because they fill you up more then boxed foods would, especially if they are high in fiber which tends to fill the stomach easily.

John asks…

What are some great, healthy dinner/appetizer recipes?

It’ss immensley boring… and we already have a few desserts planned out for this evening- homemade peanutbutter cookies and chewy chocolate chip cookies. (1/2 chocolate chip, the other half of the batch peanutbutter). And… Italian shortbread, maybe. Anyone have any other recipes that are healthy? Whether it’s dinner, desserts or appetizers?
Thanks!!=)

answers:

~~Lasagna Rolls (Appetizer makes 6 servings, 2 rolls each)~~

**Ingredients**
12 whole-wheat lasagna noodles
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 14-ounce package extra-firm water-packed tofu, drained, rinsed and crumbled
3 cups chopped spinach
1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons finely chopped Kalamata olives
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 25-ounce jar marinara sauce, preferably lower-sodium, divided
1/2 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook noodles according to package directions. Drain, rinse, return to the pot and cover with cold water until ready to use.

2. Meanwhile, heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 20 seconds. Add tofu and spinach and cook, stirring often, until the spinach wilts and the mixture is heated through, 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer to a bowl; stir in Parmesan, olives, crushed red pepper, salt and 2/3 cup marinara sauce.

3. Wipe out the pan and spread 1 cup of the remaining marinara sauce in the bottom. To make lasagna rolls, place a noodle on a work surface and spread 1/4 cup of the tofu filling along it. Roll up and place the roll, seam-side down, in the pan. Repeat with the remaining noodles and filling. (The tofu rolls will be tightly packed in the pan.) Spoon the remaining marinara sauce over the rolls.

4. Place the pan over high heat, cover and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium; let simmer for 3 minutes. Sprinkle the rolls with mozzarella and cook, covered, until the cheese is melted and the rolls are heated through, 1 to 2 minutes. Serve hot.

Mandy asks…

Healthy dinner recipes that include sausage?

I have sausages that have to be cooked tonight but I dont want to make sausage on a bun.

Anyone have any creative recipes with sausage?

answers:

Saute some peppers and onions in a pan set aside in another dish after onions are translucent and peppers are slightly browned(your serving dish will work)
cut sausage into bit size pieces
cook sausage until browned(make sure you stir frequently to prevent sticking)
add salt, pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon of chili flakes (more chili flakes can be added if needed)
2-3 tablespoons of water to remove brown from the pan.
Add the peppers and onions back into pan when sausage is about 2mins from finished continue till sausage is fully cooked
steam rice (boil bag rice will work also) this should be started in time to finish about the same time as the sausage.
Great with green beans, corn, or even a bag of mixed vegetables.

P.s. Peppers and onions should be cut in a pretty big size so people who don’t care for them(such as me) can pick them out
this dish is usually best with high quality sausage.

Your Questions About Healthy Foods To Eat

Charles asks…

What are healthy foods to eat for dinner?

I usually eat pretty healthy foods for breakfast and lunch, but when it comes to dinner, my family tends to go for more of the fried foods. Right now, dinner is often a lot of white rice and some fried meat (chicken, steak, etc.) … :p
What are healthy alternatives that aren’t that hard to prepare?

answers:

You could try switching the white rice to brown/wild rice, or trying quinoa instead sometimes. With salmon or grilled tofu. As well as adding vegetables, like broccoli, green beans, carrot, cauliflower, asparagus, zucchini, etc and or a salad. If you can use organic natural ingredients.

Here are some healthy dinner food ideas:

~ Pasta dish with whole grain or brown rice pasta.
For example, with tomato sauce or basil pesto sauce, baby spinach, goat cheese or shredded cheese. Or a pasta salad with baby spinach or grilled vegetables, goat or mozzarella cheese, chopped cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, etc.

~ Salad: mixed baby greens, baby romaine, baby spinach, Italian salad mix, romaine lettuce, etc. With things like cherry tomatoes/tomato, cucumber, low-fat salad dressing or olive oil/vinegar, red onion, dried cranberries, goat or feta crumbles, walnut crumbles or almond slithers, grated carrot, etc.

~ Vegetables – steamed, grilled, etc. You can also try adding a drizzle of olive oil on them, balsamic vinaigrette dressing, lemon – for more flavor.

~ Salmon + wild/brown rice or sweet potato or potato or quinoa + veggies and/or salad.
- For the potato you could make oven fries with olive oil & a sprinkle of salt, basil. To make healthy creamy mashed potatoes try goat cheese added in and for sweet potatoes mashed with cinnamon.

~ Omelets with baby spinach & cheese.

~ Sandwiches.
(On whole grain bread like multigrain, ezekiel, rye, whole wheat pita, whole grain tortilla, etc.)
- Smoked salmon & cream cheese
- Pesto, tomato, baby spinach & mozzarella melt
- Falafel & hummus
- Almond or Peanut butter & jam – nut butter with no added sugar
- Egg & cheese, egg white & spinach in a whole grain tortilla, with cheese like 1-2 tbsp goat cheese
- Chickpea wrap (with things like grated carrot, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, mixed baby greens, salad dressing, etc.)
- Black bean wrap with salsa & some cheese; or a quesadilla on a whole grain tortilla
- Veggie burger
- Hummus, lettuce, grated carrot, sliced cherry tomatoes in a whole wheat pita half

~ Vegetables like broccoli, carrot, yellow & green zucchini, mushrooms, red onion stir fried in olive oil with tofu, served with wild/brown rice of whole grain noodles.

~ Whole wheat pita pizza or multigrain thin crust pizza, with tomato or pesto; baby spinach, mozzarella, grilled vegetables, etc.

Donald asks…

How can I motivate myself to eat healthy foods during breakfast (details)?

I can eat vegetables and fruits at lunch and dinner but not breakfast. I am so depressed that eating cold fruits in the morning like banana keeps me more sluggish in school. I am not against healthy food but I am just used eating fried rice or anything hot. I tried eating oatmeal but I really need foods a little bit tastier than that.

answers:

Well, you should first start out with a bit of vigor in your morning, try listening to some music. Here are a few songs:
Don’t let your feet touch ground – ash koley
Say what you need to say- john mayer
Evacuate the dance floor- cascada
NEXT once you are energized and ready for the day, here are some options:
~A bowl of cheerios with skimmed milk/ glass of cucumber water/ handful of almonds/ fruit of your choice
~Whole wheat bread toasted with organic peanut butter/100% orange juice/ apple
~Oatmeal sprinkled with almond slivers, apples, and cinnamon/ cup of green tea (decaf or caf doesn’t matter, whatevs gets you moving!)/ a couple of clementines.
If I were you, I would steer clear of bananas because they contain pottasium which will help you sleep, but will only make you more sluggish in the morning!!
A couple other options could be a breakfast burrito, bagel with low fat cream cheese, or an omelet with spinach and cheese, not everything has to be cold and lifeless!!!! Good luck!!

Mark asks…

what are cheap and healthy foods to eat for a person who runs and lifts allot?

I run sprints for about two hours five days a Weekend then lift for another two hours three days a week(a painful combo) for the school track team and i don’t have a whole lot of money to eat food. I need something healthy and fast because i don’t have as much time to cook and something to better my performance.

Canned Tuna, lunch meats, high fiber/protein cereals, canned veggies, supplements…

I just recommend canned tuna, i eat it straight out of the can and it’s got like 33g of protein and costs nothing.

Michael asks…

What are healthy foods to eat while trying to diet?

I am 17 years old, 5’9, and around 150 lbs. I have a little double chin that isn’t too noticeable, but it drives me crazy. I know I don’t eat very healthy, but I want to start. What would be some good foods to eat while trying to diet? I don’t like salad, so don’t say salads. Thanks for the help in advance :]

answers:

Fruits and vegetables are generally best. Try green veggies (with high fiber) such as broccoli, green beans, celery, cucumber.

Also, look for sugar free products. In particular, I like to make sugar free pudding and jello since they are good tasting desserts that don’t cost too many calories.

If you eat eggs, don’t eat the yolk. An egg white is only 17 calories while the whole egg is 70 calories.

Also, Dannon makes a brand of yogurt that only contains 60 calories because it has Splenda in it.

In general, you want foods with low calorie density. You can google “low calorie density” and the results will give you a bunch of good ideas.

Good luck.

William asks…

Pros and cons on seeding Mars?

Would you approve dropping seeds of selected northern arid region plants at Martian polar peripheries?

Yes or No and Why?

I think this would be an excellent test of how plants adapt to completely new sphere, a different atmosphere and magnetic field and so on. By the time colonies are based there, an assortment of adapted plants might exist, offering possible food sources and organic materials, perhaps able to support some limited animal life. Should this be limited to mosses and ferns, are there any trees or other plants you would recommend?

Are there any hardy insects you would include in a later drop?

If you think we should avoid this and leave the planet in a pristine condition, please give your reasons…

It is my belief that any plants from the same seeds would be greatly different, Mars to Earth versions compared. What do you think?

All the landscape I have seen there looks pretty barren — but should we do the archaeology and geologic history first?

Does anyone know what the Russian and Chinese views are on this subject?

answers:

Ferrous oxide and silicate makes some rather poor dirt. Martian soil contains no humus, loam, or clay.

The atmosphere at the surface of Mars is about one millibar. The density of the carbon dioxide on Mars isn’t nearly high enough for any Earth life to use.

The temperature at the surface of Mars at the polar peripheries is too cold — colder than Antarctica.

The moisture of the Martian air and soil is negligible. There’s no liquid water for plants to use.

Mars has no ozone layer to screen out solar UV, and no significant magnetic field to whap away high energy particles. Earth creatures would get sunburned and radiation poisoned after a while.

You could almost as easily try to grow a garden on the surface of the moon as on Mars; i.e., forget about it. The planet would have to be worked on a great deal before even lichens would take hold there.

Organic Jar food VS Home made?

Hi there, my daughter is 7 months old and i have just started to introduce her to solids, im a first time mum so id like some advice, our doctor said fresh fruit juice in the morning, some yogurt in the afternoon and night time baby pudding at night – anyway, id like to know the pros and cons of giving my baby organic jar food, what do you think? less hassle and even more healthier because its organic? more variety in flavors? or is home made food the way to go? thanks for all your answers…
one more thing… how do i make the food at home if i were to?

answers:

I started out doing home made, but it is hard to do the great mixes you can get at the store. I have since gone to using pre made food and if you look at it, it is just the fruit or veggie and water. I don’t see anything wrong with it. Definitely less time consuming and so many options. I think my daughter likes the variety. She is starting to lean away from all baby food now though and she wants more table food.

Good luck!

I want to get a lot healthier?

OK, I quit smokin. Now I’m turning to my food choices.

I want to work in more organic foods. But it is expensive so I need to acknowledge that I may never get my kitchen completely switched over, so where do I spend wisely?

Which are the most important foods to eat the organic variety? (I’m assuming besides your fav, most often eaten foods)

Which are the cheapest or most similar in price to the regular?

Are ordinarily healthy foods worth switching? Rolled oats and long grain rice, for example.

Are organic junk foods really all that good for you? I saw Newman’s Own version of Oreos…had to laugh, of course I bought them!

Any other trickery welcome!

PS–Your organic stories pro and con are welcome too…what can I expect from small and large changes?

answers:

To eat healthier, you don’t necessarily need to switch to organic foods. But if you feel you need to, veggies (broccoli, celery, etc.) and fruits is where I’d put the $. Organic junk food ain’t worth it.

The fact that you quit smoking was a great first step. The key to being healthier is exercise. Now try, if you aren’t already doing so, and work in 30 min of cardio 3x’s a week. This could be running, speed walking, jump rope, etc. Anything to get your heart rate up.

As far as food…

Cut sodium! You should only eat between 1800-2000mg of sodium a day. It will surprise you how much sodium many foods have in it, esp. Soup and processed food. By cutting sodium, you’ll lose weight and lower your blood pressure.

Eat more fresh fruits and veggies — organic or not.

Cut your sugar intake too. This doesn’t mean no sweets. I love frozen yogurt. Dreyers is really good.

Eat more fiber. Cereal is a great source for me. I like Smart Start.

Carbs — I personally love carbs, so I don’t cut them out. I just watch them and cut them when I can. Instead of a sandwich, try a wrap. When eating pasta, try egg noodles or spaghetti squash instead. I don’t eat much rice, but if you do just eat brown rice. Don’t eat like Rice a Roni or anything. Get “naked” rice and add your own flavoring.

Don’t deny yourself “treats.” If you do, you will just get sick of “healthy” food and resort back to your old ways. When you are craving sweets, make a smoothie or eat some yogurt.

Whole foods is a great place to get healthy food, but you can get healthy food it at your locally supermarket too — just read labels. Look for low sodium, low sat. Fat, moderate carbs, low sugar, etc.

Pros and cons to including fruits/veggies in a raw diet?

My dog used to eat cooked/purreed veggies in every raw meat meal , but I quit all cooked foods so now she gets them fresh juiced once a day in between her all-meat breakfast and dinner. I rotate all the veggies she can safely eat like carrots and broccoli and more exotic things like asparagus and kale and feed both the juice for vitamins and the pulp for fiber since otherwise she has anal gland isues. She weighs 7.4 lbs and gets 2 oz veggies and one small piece of fruit per day. For fruit she gets anything except grapes-from peaches and apples to mango and papaya. They (the cats- who don’t get any fruits or veggies other than the grass-and the dog) also get homegrown wheatgrass. I am careful to remove all seeds from fruits and vegetables and wash everything in the same Gerber nursery water I give the animals to drink. She gets 2-4 oz meat daily depending on calorie content and she’s ideal weight. They all eat 100% organic everything so no worries about pesticides. Thanks! Oh and please have a reason why you think they should or shouldn’t be included-not just that dogs are carnivores. I wasn’t going to give anything but meat til I read about Bramble the 28 year old vegan border collie lol
She’s 1 year old and in excellent shape as far as I or the vet can tell-she’s solid muscle and can run circles around all of her friends. She’s also a Pom/chi if that matters
She does seem to digest them just fine so long as they’re juiced
I don’t think she actually NEEDS that much, she just needs some pulp or I end up having to express her glands. As far as percentages-I figure as long as she gets the correct amount of meat it’s ok to have some extra veggies since she’s always hungry lol. It’s also hard to juice much less than that and it’s best to juice directly before consumption. Just wanted to make sure there were no harmful effects. Thanks everyone!

answers:

Aside from cost and inconvenience, I cannot think of any cons. Whether or not there are pros hasn’t been studied adequately to state as fact. There is one study which demonstrates a dramatic reduction of one cancer in one breed of dog with several servings of green and orange veggies per week, and there are studies which show that dogs are able to metabolize certain antioxidants from veggies/fruits… Those studies do not demonstrate whether those antioxidants have healthful properties to dogs. Aside from these, there just isn’t much information on this.

I don’t see any harm and I suspect that it is possible that this is beneficial… At least, that has been my logic in deciding to feed Cuisinarted fruits and veggies with raw meat/bones/organs. It does seem to me that you are feeding an awfully high percentage, though… Half or a third of your diet is veggie and fruit matter. If this is necessary for her colon to function normally, I guess that is what you should do. My dog is considerably larger than yours, and gets 2# of meat/bones/organs per day and usually 4 oz. Of veggies/fruits.

I wouldn’t be basing my decision to include or not include veggies/fruits in a dog’s diet on Bramble. Most of what was reported about her goes back to PETA and to a religious magazine, and I would regard the sources as suspect. Also, not all dogs are physiologically identical… The oldest Doberman I personally know got to a very advanced age on the crappiest of crap kibble… Doesn’t mean the food is good, just that somehow that one dog was able to thrive on it.
